The distinction is visible at the top. An extends over the bust. An corset ends beneath it, leaving the bust to a separate garment or to the wearer's preference. Neither label describes every detail of the fit, but it establishes an important starting point.

An overbust must accommodate more of the upper torso. An underbust allows the bust layer to be chosen independently. That changes what you need to inspect before comparing the two.

Overbust: one continuous garment

Look at the neckline, the available bust room and the relationship between bust and waist shaping. The upper edge might be relatively straight, curved or strongly shaped. Those differences can matter under or as part of clothing.

A maker's overbust specification can be very model-specific. Orchard Corset's CS-511 describes its neckline, back and torso lengths separately, showing why the single word “overbust” cannot guarantee identical coverage between designs. [J07]

Underbust: an independent upper layer

An underbust leaves more decisions to the rest of the outfit. You may combine it with a bra, , blouse or dress, depending on the intended styling. Examine the gap or overlap between the upper edge and any bra wire, or trim.

Two individually comfortable garments can meet awkwardly where their edges overlap. Try the planned combination rather than considering the corset in isolation. The ability to choose the bust layer separately is useful only when the components cooperate.

The table is a map of questions, not a promise that one type is more comfortable. Length, pattern and the way the edges meet the body still matter.

Make the choice through an outfit

Start with the clothing or combination you actually intend to wear. A single visible garment might make an overbust appealing. Keeping a favourite bra or shirt may make an underbust more convenient. Neither choice is evidence of more advanced corsetry knowledge.

For either type, pay attention to seated length and follow specialist sizing guidance. Do not assume that removing bust coverage makes every other measurement easier or less important.

Where to continue

The Corsets Page explains the broader construction. Bustiers and Basques explore neighbouring lingerie forms. Compare those when you want some extended structure without assuming that every occasion calls for a corset.
