join both legs into one garment extending to the waist. In North American usage, “pantyhose” often suggests finer, sheer hosiery, while “tights” is frequently used for more opaque styles. Elsewhere, tights may be the broader term. Read the material and rather than relying on the regional name.
The continuous construction changes the dressing experience. There is no separate garter system or thigh grip , but there is a waistband and a body section to fit.
Read the upper section
Inspect the waistband, , seams and the transition from the body to the legs. A reinforced upper section may be useful for one outfit and visible beneath another. A high-cut garment may need hosiery with a different line at the hip.
A control-top description also deserves separate attention. Decide whether you want deliberate shaping or simply leg coverage. The presence of a waistband does not mean you must accept a compressive fit.
Length and room work together
Use the maker's size chart, which may combine height and weight or provide other measurements. General clothing size alone may not describe enough about the length required through the legs and torso.
When fitting, check that the fabric can reach its intended position without repeatedly dragging the upper section upward. A waistband that feels uncomfortable is not improved by assuming all tights are supposed to fit that way. Another size or construction may be more appropriate.
Think about the clothing above
A dress with a high slit, a short skirt or a sheer section can reveal parts of the hosiery that remain hidden beneath other clothing. Try the complete outfit in movement. A reinforced toe can also matter with open shoes.
FALKE's Pure Matt knee-high reference lists , transparency, finish, shaft length and toe construction separately. Although it is not a pair of tights, it demonstrates the useful habit of reading these as independent hosiery specifications rather than letting one number describe everything. [J10]
Colour and finish
A close colour match can make hosiery a quiet continuation of the outfit. A deliberate contrast can turn it into a visual element. Matte, shine, pattern and texture alter that choice again, so compare the garment under the actual clothing and lighting when possible.
Keep care specific to the label. Hosiery that looks similar may not share the same instructions. The purpose of the category is to explain the garment's form, not to erase the differences between individual products.
