Hold-ups and stay-ups are commonly used names for hosiery with an upper grip system. They offer the separate-leg appearance of without requiring a . Their independence is the main distinction, not a guarantee of one particular material or level of transparency.
A top may conceal the gripping surface on the inside. Read the product details because an outwardly similar stocking may instead be designed for suspension.

What holds it up?
How the upper band works
Many stay-ups use silicone at the top to help retain their position. FALKE's Lunelle design explicitly describes a silicone coating and advises against applying cream to the legs for optimum hold. That is a product-specific instruction that illustrates why skin preparation can matter; other products should be used according to their own directions. [J09]
Do not assume that a tighter-looking automatically provides a better experience. Choose the appropriate size and examine how the top sits, including while seated.
Grip is only one part of fit
The leg must also have enough appropriate length and room. If the hosiery is repeatedly pulled upward to compensate for an unsuitable size, the upper band cannot solve every problem. Read the whole size guide and the intended wearing position.
A rolling top, slipping band or uncomfortable edge is a reason to reassess the fit and product rather than accept constant adjustment as inevitable. Another construction, including suspended stockings or , may suit the wearer better.
Wearing with an outfit
Consider where the top falls relative to the clothing hem. A fitted short dress may reveal the band while seated even when it is hidden while standing. That can be a deliberate choice, but it should not be discovered only after leaving home.
A visible lace top also becomes part of the outfit's design. Compare it with the lace on other pieces instead of assuming every black lace looks the same. Different motif scales can create either an intentional contrast or a busier result than expected.
Care for the actual product
The gripping surface and the leg fabric may have different sensitivities. Follow the label and manufacturer instructions for washing, drying and storage, rather than adding products intended to improve grip without guidance.
When preparing an outfit, allow time to try the hosiery with your usual dressing and skin-care routine. Keep the product packaging until its instructions are familiar. A practical system is one you can repeat comfortably, not merely one that stays in place for a photograph.
