A delicate cycle is useful only when the garment is suitable for that machine process. Do not assume that “lingerie”, “gentle” or “hand wash” on a control panel overrides the label on the piece.
Start with explicit machine-wash permission, then choose the programme, temperature and handling that match the instructions.
Check method and limits together
Read the entire label, including drying and any restrictions on bleach or finishing. GINETEX distinguishes between ordinary, mild and very mild washing processes; temperature is only part of the instruction. [C1]
The same number on two programmes does not necessarily mean the mechanical treatment is identical. Consult the machine’s programme description when the difference matters.
Prepare the piece
Fasten hooks where appropriate and keep the garment away from items with rough or sharp hardware. A suitable laundry bag can help separate it from other items, but it does not make an unsuitable process safe.
Bravissimo notes that some non-wired lingerie permits cool machine washing while other pieces require handwashing. [C3] This is why “no underwire” should not be treated as the only decision rule either.
Choose a compatible load
Follow the garment, machine and detergent guidance. Avoid using the lingerie as a small fragile addition to a heavy load of unrelated clothing. Think about colour transfer, abrasion and available movement in the drum.
Use a detergent suitable for the fibre and finish at the instructed dose. Adding more does not make the treatment more careful and may make appropriate rinsing harder.
Plan what happens at the end
Remove the pieces promptly enough to arrange them for their permitted drying method. Check cups, straps and closures rather than leaving twisted items in the machine.
Machine-wash permission does not automatically allow a tumble dryer. Keep the drying decision separate and follow Drying and Storage↗ new tab for the next step.
Keep exceptions out of the load
cups, highly embellished pieces, rigid structured garments or items with unclear instructions should not be included merely because other lingerie is machine washable. Use their own directions.
When a piece matters particularly to you and the instructions remain ambiguous, contact the maker. A brief question can be more useful than trying a programme because its name sounds reassuring.
A good routine removes uncertainty before washing. It should not depend on discovering afterward which garment was the exception.
