Hosiery can be easy to damage at the very moment it is being put on. Jewellery, rough nails, a snagging surface or hurried pulling can meet fine fabric before the garment has even been worn.
Care begins with handling, then follows the specific wash and drying instructions. A sheer stocking, opaque tight and grip-top stay-up should not be assumed to have identical requirements.
Prepare the area and your hands
Check for anything that could catch the knit. Remove sharp jewellery when useful and keep the garment away from rough surfaces. Ease fabric into position in sections rather than pulling forcefully from one small point.
This is a handling principle, not a prescribed dressing technique for every product. Follow any instructions supplied by the maker, especially for specialized compression or medical hosiery, which is outside this Book’s scope.
Separate stockings and stay-ups
Traditional suspended stockings rely on a garter system, while stay-ups use their own gripping upper band. Their care questions can differ. A grip band is not simply more decorative lace.
Check whether lotions or particular care products are restricted by the manufacturer. Do not use ordinary body products or household cleaners on a gripping surface without instructions permitting them.
Give clips and straps their own check
On a garter belt, inspect fastenings for rough edges, damage or strain. A clip that snags hosiery is not solved by treating the stocking more carefully every time. The hardware itself needs attention.
Keep the belt and stockings separate when washing instructions require different methods. A coordinated set does not necessarily share a single .
Follow the actual laundering instruction
Use the permitted temperature and process, then dry as directed. GINETEX’s label guidance applies to the finished article, including accessories and applications. [C2] A fabric’s appearance is not enough to choose a machine cycle.
Do not assume a laundry bag makes a restricted process suitable. It may help separate garments, but it does not change what the hosiery is designed to tolerate.
Inspect before storing
Check for a run, damaged toe, loose seam or rough attachment. A small flaw may change how reliably the piece can be worn. Keep snag-prone items away from exposed hooks and rough .
The aim is not to make hosiery precious or difficult. It is to give a finely made garment enough time and attention that its next wear begins with confidence in its condition, rather than a surprise at the last moment.
